Create User Setting to Allow Some Overlap in Roll Product
In some cases, Measure will create more waste than would be the case in a real-world installation. In the screenshot below, most installers would be able to get both 32A and 26B out of one width of carpet, without the need for waste shown by Measure.
What we normally suggest in these circumstances is for the user to slightly alter the dimension of one of the rooms, tricking Measure into creating sufficient space for the two pieces to fit in the carpet width. This has always felt like a cheat, besides which it compromises the quantity calculated for any add-on products in the room that is changed.
It would be a nice feature if, in some cases, roll product is allowed to slightly overlap on the roll in Measure. My thought is that the setting should specify the amount by which cuts can overlap, and maybe the amount is limited to say 7.5cm (3 inches).
The user would select the option to allow overlap, specifying the amount of overlap they would be comfortable with. Overlap would only occur when a cut is moved on a roll, at which point a warning would appear advising the amount of the overlap along with an OK or Cancel option. If OK is selected the cut sits in the new position slightly overlapping; if Cancel, the cut reverts back to where it came from.

I think I see what you're saying, Chris. Do you get this request frequently from users in the field?
Chris, is Cut Square checked in the Products List? If so uncheck it and see what happens.
Hi Dave, good thought, but it was unchecked. Interlocked, the carpet would be over-width.
Not understanding the overlap Chris, the installer in me can't wrap my head around it. Can the user provided an project and some clarification how this would be achieved and not be short on product?
Justin, we don't get the request in so many words. Most often we see it when a client asks us what to do if they see cuts that will interlock when physically cut in the real world, but Measure won't allow them to interlock because they overlap by a centimetre or two (1/2 inch-1 inch). We tell them to adjust the size of the room/s slightly to allow Measure to do the interlocking or extend the width of the carpet.
When I asked a client if the ability to overlap might be something they would like to see in Measure for carpet only, they responded positively. Logic would dictate that the ability to overlap would be restricted to maybe a couple of inches.
I would see it as a General Setting "Allow Carpet to overlap up to________" (anything more than three inches would be rejected). Then, as a user, if I had this set to two inches when I move cuts on a roll I would get an alert if overlap occurred, and the amount of that overlap i.e. the overlap would only occur on moving cuts; it would not happen by default.
I will have Caedan attach a simple scenario showing a use case.
Hi Chris,
I've escalated this to our development team for consideration.
